Bearago was created in 2025 to provide guide services in the Western Mountains of Maine. The name means bear-ish, joining bear with the Italian suffix ago, meaning ish.
Trailmen’s Tallow was born from that same outdoor life, rendering bear fat into balms and tallow products for days in the woods and on the water.

Our Story
Bearago was created to provide Maine guide services. Trailmen’s Tallow grew from rendering fat for balms and tallow products, using ethically harvested Maine black bears and ingredients suited to life in the North Woods.

Each balm starts with bear tallow from ethically harvested Maine black bears, then is blended with locally sourced oils, herbs, and simple ingredients selected for outdoor use.
The tallow is rendered the old fashioned way in small batches. The Original balm contains no water, fillers, or artificial ingredients.
No. The Sun Balm includes non-nano zinc and outdoor focused oils, but it has not been tested for SPF and should not be relied upon to prevent sunburn.
The Guides Gift Pack includes three jars made for sun, wind, and black flies: Original, After-Bite, and Sun Balm.
